U.S. Marines from the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Marine Corps Base Hawaii conduct an amphibious assault training mission as part of Rim of the Pacific 2012. Republic of Korea (ROK) Marines and soldiers from the New Zealand army also participated in the mission. The force arrived by CH-53 helicopter insertion from the USS Essex aircraft carrier. The objective of the training scenario was to secure an enemy base camp that was assembling vehicle-born improvised explosive devices (VB-IEDs).
